Nick Jonas, a member of the Jonas Brothers, stirred controversy on Wednesday with a post on X (formerly Twitter) that appeared to support Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Jonas shared a photo of Musk along with the caption, “Take us to the Year 3000.” The tweet came in response to Musk sharing an old GIF of the Jonas Brothers spinning a coffee table, accompanied by the caption, “The tables have turned,” referencing a news story claiming Tesla’s stock had “doubled since Donald Trump won.”
The tweet quickly drew criticism from fans and followers, who took issue with what seemed like an endorsement of Musk, a polarizing figure.
“Nick, stop this. We all prayed for you in social studies class when you announced your diabetes in the middle of the day,” one user commented.
Another quipped, “Let me go see what ‘unproblematic I stay out of the way’ Kevin Jonas is up to.”
A third user added, “Tweeting at Elon Musk is definitely a choice.”
While many criticized Jonas, some fans speculated that his tweet might have been misunderstood. One wrote, “Am I the only one who still has faith in him and believes he meant ‘take us to the year 3000’ as a ‘I don’t want to be here, I’d rather escape these dark times’? I mean, he was home-schooled.”
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Jonas’ representatives for comment, but no response has been provided.
The tweet places Jonas among other celebrities who have recently shown a connection to Musk or his ventures. Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Khloé Kardashian will launch a video podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land, exclusively on X starting January 8. Guests will include Scott Disick, Kourtney Kardashian, Jay Shetty, and Mel Robbins.
In November, Kim Kardashian promoted Tesla’s humanoid robot assistant and posed alongside a Tesla car in a photo shoot.
However, not all celebrities have had positive experiences with Musk. Saturday Night Live cast member Chloe Fineman recently recalled a difficult interaction with Musk during his hosting stint on the show.
“You made me, Chloe Fineman, burst into tears because I stayed up late writing a sketch,” she shared in a now-deleted TikTok. “I asked if you had any questions, and you stared at me like you were firing me from Tesla and said, ‘It’s not funny.’”
Fineman continued, “I waited for you to laugh and say, ‘Ha ha, just kidding.’ But instead, you flipped through my script, page by page, saying, ‘I didn’t laugh once, not a single time.’”
Jonas’ tweet has ignited a lively debate among fans, leaving many wondering whether the post was an innocent reference or a deeper statement.
